American Classroom Customs

1. If the teacher asks a question, you are expected to give an answer. If you do not understand the question, you should raise your hand and ask the teacher to repeat the question. If you do not know the answer, it is all right to tell the teacher that you do not know. Then he or she knows what you need to lean.

2. There is no excuse for not doing your homework. If you are absent, you should call your teacher or someone who is in your class and ask for the assignment. It is your responsibility to find out what assignments you have missed. It is not the teacher’s responsibility to remind you of missed assignments.

3. You must not be absent on a test day. If you are seriously ill, call and let the teacher know you will not be there for the test. If your teacher allows make-up tests, you should take the test within one or two days after returning to class. Serious illness is the only reason for missing a test.

UNESCO has recognized the 82 Doctors’ stone tablets as a Memory of the World. They are inscribed with the names of 2,313 doctorate holders who passed the royal examinations between 1442 and 1780. The stone tablets, which bear the name of Trang Nguyen, Bang Nhan, Tham Hoa, and Hoang Giap (the first, second, third, and fourth winning categories of the royal examinations), sit on the backs of stone turtles.

These stone tablets are different from those in other Asian countries, including China which has influenced Viet Nam feudal education. The decoration on Viet Nam’s stone tablets were more diverse.

By naming Viet Nam’s stone tablets as a Memory of the World, UNESCO acknowledges Viet Nam’s efforts to preserve and promote heritages to international community. The recognition would also help to raise the awareness in heritage preservation.

Thanks for your letter. It's very interesting to know about schools in the USA. I think schools in Viet Nam are a little different. Vietnamese students usually wear uniform. Classes start at 7.00 each morning and end at 11.15 in the afternoon. Students have a 30-minute break after three periods. At break time, many students play games. Some go to the canteen and buy something to eat or drink. Others talk together. Our school year lasts for 9 months, from September to May. Then we have a 3-month summer vacation. We feel too much long to come back to school to meet friends. I hope to know more about schools in your country.

Every weekday she gets up at 3:00 in the morning because the program starts at 6.30. On Fridays she comes home from the BBC at about 2.00 in the afternoons and she just relaxes. On Friday evenings she doesn’t go out, but sometimes a friend comes for dinner. He or she brings wine and they cook. Ann loves cooking. They listen to music or just chat.

On Saturday mornings she gets up at 9.00 and she goes shopping. Then in the evenings she sometimes goes to the theater or opera with a friend – she loves opera. Then they eat in her favorite Chinese restaurant. On Sunday mornings she stays in bed late. She doesn’t get up until 11.00. Sometimes in the afternoons she visits her sister. She lives in the country and has two children. She likes playing with her niece and nephew, but she leaves early because she goes to bed at 8.00 on Sunday evenings.
