a. Conjunctions: both...and, not only... but also, either...or, neither...nor

  • BOTH + DANH TỪ+ AND + DANH TỪ: Khi có 2 chủ từ nối bởi BOTH... AND, động từ luôn luôn là số nhiều.
    • Ex: Both my father and my mother are over 50 years old.
  • NOT ONLY + DANH TỪ+ BUT ALSO + DANH TỪ: Khi có 2 chủ từ nối bởi NOT ONLY... BUT ALSO, động từ số ít hay số nhiều sẽ phụ thuộc vào chủ từ đứng sau but also là số ít hay số nhiều.
    • Ex: Not only Mr. Park but also Huong was surprised.

      Not only Mr. Park but also the students were surprised.

  • EITHER + DANH TỪ+ OR + DANH TỪ: Khi có 2 chủ từ nối bởi EITHER ... OR. động từ số ít hay số nhiều sẽ phụ thuộc vào chủ từ đứng sau Or là số ít hay số nhiều.
    • Ex: Either Uyen or Trang is here.

      Either Uyên or her friends are here.

  • NEITHER + DANH TỪ + NOR + DANH TỪ: Khi có 2 chủ từ nối bởi NEITHER... NOR, động từ số ít hay số nhiều sẽ phụ thuộc vào chủ từ đứng sau Nor là số ít hay số nhiều.
    • Ex: Neither Jackie nor Pat is going to 20 to work tomorrow.

      Neither Jackie nor the tutors are going to go to work tomorrow.

b. Cleft sentences in the passive (Câu chẻ ở dạng bị động)

  • Với danh từ / đại từ chỉ người: It + is / was + Noun / pronoun + who + be + V3/-ed…
    • Ex: Fans gave that singer a lot of flowers.
      → It was that singer who was given a lot of flowers.
  • Với danh từ chỉ vật: It + is / was + Noun + that + be + V3/-ed…
    • Ex 1: People talk about this film.
      → It is this film that is talked about.
    • Ex 2: Fans gave that singer a lot of flowers.
      → It was a lot of flowers that were given to that singer.

3.1. Unit 14 Language Focus Exercise 1

Combine the sentences using both...and, either...or, or neither...nor. (Nối câu bởi sử dụng both...and, either...or, hoặc neither...nor.)

  1. Jim is on holiday and so is Carol.
  2. George doesn't smoke and he doesn't drink.
  3. Jim hasn't got a car. Carol hasn't got a car, either.
  4. It was a very boring film. It was very long, too.
  5. Is that man's name Richard? Or is it Robert? It's one of the two.
  6. I haven't got time to go on holiday. And I haven't got the money.
  7. We can leave today or we can leave tomorrow - whichever you prefer.
  8. Helen lost her passport at the airport. She also lost her wallet there.
  9. There are good reasons for using bicycles in big cities: they are clean. They are also easy to park.
  10. On Friday evening, sometimes I go to the cinema, sometimes I stay home and watch TV.

Change the sentences into cleft sentences in the passive. (Đổi sang câu chẻ (câu nhấn mạnh) ở thể bị động.)

  1. Fans gave Christina lots of flowers.
  2. The pedestrian asked the policeman for direction to the post office.
  3. People talked a lot about his house.
  4. His father bought him a bicycle for his birthday.
  5. He describes his hometown in his novel. 
  6. She frightened the children.
  7. Her younger sister broke her glasses.
  8. The Prince kissed my younger sister at the party.
  9. My father gave me this story book as a birthday present.
  10. Vietnamese people celebrate Tet as the greatest occasion in a year.
