Nowadays, although some of the traditional toys have been replaced by modern toys, the meaning and the performance has been kept and developed. It is certain that the Mid-Autumn day is important and famous for Vietnamese people.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional celebration for Vietnamese children. It is held on the 15th day on the 8th lunar month (often in late September or early October) in the middle of autumn and it is celebrated for a whole day. On this day, the adults and the parents prepare many different foods - Moon cakes, candies, biscuits, jellies, and fruit, such as grapefruit, longan fruit, bananas, apples, mango, etc. All of them are designed with fun symbols, for example, dogs, cats, mice, etc.
Moon cakes are specific cakes and are only in this festival. Moon cake, which is made from flavour, meat, egg, dried fruit, pumpkin’s seed, peanut, is so sweet and good tasting. Everyone sounds “How delicious Moon cakes are!” after tasting them and can’t say no with them. Moon cakes symbolize Luck, Happiness, Health and Wealth on the Mid-Autumn day.
Besides that, the children are provided with many nice lanterns - star lanterns, flower lanterns and diverse funny masks such as clown mask, lion mask, prince or princess mask for the special performance in the evening of the full moon. Everywhere is fallen in the active and colorful air. The main point of the Mid-Autumn is that children use the beautiful lanterns, wear funny masks, perform fantastic lion dances, sing folklore songs in the house’s grounds or in the streets when the moon is rising. It is really an exciting show.
The Mid-Autumn celebration is also an opportunity for members of the family to visit together and share together everything in their year. The young generation expresses their gratitude to the old generation. The parents show their love for their children.
Everyone wants to join in it. And it really is a good example of the traditional culture of the Vietnamese.
Every year, on August 15 is the Mid-Autumn Festival. On that day, the children in my village were very excited to wear nice clothes and hold toys to join them to celebrate the Tet holiday.
Before the festival, my mother went to the market to prepare a beautiful star lamp for me. At 7 pm, when they called at the gate, I asked my parents to let me join the flow of people, holding a bright light in hand to pick the lamp. Our route will go from the end of the village to the communal house. Leading the army is the young siblings. Each of you will take a drum to play each song very harmoniously. Then there will be girls who will make us sing different children's songs. At the end of the group, there will be some adults following their children, and then going to break up the family. Initially, the delegation will be divided into 2 rows, but after a short time, the students rushed closer to talk and laugh happily.
When they reached the communal house, a tray of five fruits, a plate of confectionery and fruit were displayed. We quickly sat at each stable table. The village secretary will be the host, Uncle Cuoi and Ms. Hang will appear and give presents to us. When the deck began to crack, so did the entertainment. Alternating are the strange games that you have arranged in advance. We had fun together and came home when the moon was up.
The festival always leaves me with unforgettable memories. The different feelings that go through each year are when I become more mature, more thoughtful. Those were funny notes in my childhood music.
