Gắn liền với dịp lễ Tết là sự xuất hiện của những phong tục, phong tục cổ truyền ngày Tết bao gồm toàn bộ những hoạt động sống của con người đã được hình thành trong suốt chiều dài lịch sử, mang tính ổn định thành nề nếp và được cộng đồng tiếp thu, thừa nhận, ông cha ta đã truyền bá từ đời này sang đời khác và thế hệ con cháu vẫn tiếp tục gìn giữ phát huy. Trước hết đó là những phong tục cho thời điểm tất niên (cuối năm), phong tục cúng ông Công - ông Táo vào ngày 23 tháng Chạp, khi ấy mọi người sẽ dọn dẹp bếp của nhà mình và mua cá chép vàng đem thả để tiễn ông Công ông Táo về trời sau một năm. Bên cạnh đó còn có hoạt động gói bánh chưng, bánh tét, nhà nào cũng phải có nồi bánh chưng mới gọi là có không khí Tết, mọi người thường gói vào ngày gần Tết 28 - 30 tháng Chạp. Trên bàn thờ tổ tiên là một mâm ngũ quả được bày biện đẹp mắt đầy đủ, và thêm vào đó là mâm cơm cúng hết năm hay còn gọi là làm cơm tất niên, như là một bữa cơm chào tạm biệt một năm cũ. Phong tục treo những câu đối đỏ trong nhà tượng trưng cho mong ước may mắn, phúc lộc và an khang. Việc duy trì những phong tục cổ truyền ngày Tết nói trên của người Việt không chỉ đơn giản theo thói quen, theo phong trào cộng đồng mà đó đã trở thành truyền thống văn hóa Việt, là ý thức giữ gìn bản sắc văn hóa để không bị mai một đi.
Theo thời gian và sự thăng trầm của lịch sử dân tộc, những phong tục của người Việt nói chung và phong tục ngày Tết nói riêng đã không ngừng biến đổi theo hoàn cảnh xã hội, có nhiều phong tục đã mất đi nhưng vẫn còn những phong tục đã trở thành nét văn hóa không thể thiếu và không thể mất đi của người Việt Nam.
