Chính vì điều đó, Viện hàn lâm Khoa học và Nghệ thuật điện ảnh Mỹ (AMPAS) ngày 28/4 đã quyết định điều chỉnh một quy chế quan trọng trong việc xét giải thưởng đó là các bộ phim không chiếu rạp vẫn có thể tham gia tranh giải Oscar 2021. Theo truyền thống trước đó, AMPAS quy định các bộ phim cần được trình chiếu trong thời gian tối thiểu 7 ngày tại các rạp chiếu phim mới đủ điều kiện để có thể dự tranh giải thưởng điện ảnh danh giá nhất thế giới này. Cho tới khi các rạp chiếu phim được mở cửa trở lại, AMPAS sẽ đưa ra quyết định tiếp theo về thời điểm chấm dứt áp dụng quy định linh hoạt trên.
