Local people often called the system by its nickname, the Tube, because of the shape of the underground tunnel. Built in 1863, it’s the oldest underground transport system in the world. Consisting of only a few lines and a handful of stations in the early 1900s, London Underground nowadays makes up 270 stations and 11 lines. The total length of more than 400 kilometres makes London Underground the third longest metro system in the world. Despite the name, only 45 percent of the rail line is below the ground.
