New Year’s Eve is a time of transferring meaning and holiness between the new year and the old year, which is an important time when heaven and earth intersect. The ritual offering ceremony on the 30th night is also called the exorcism ceremony which takes place at the last minute of the year with the meaning of removing all the bad things of the old year to welcome the good of a coming year. Vietnam has a lot of customs and traditions such as celebrating Tet festival, decorating houses before special occasions or eating red sticky rice on the first day of the month. However, the most special tradition is wearing Ao Dai on special occasions. A tight-fitting silk tunic called ‘Ao Dai’ is the Vietnamese national dress for women – it was briefly banned following the fall of Saigon, but is now made in white for schoolgirls and is designed to accentuate womanly curves whilst covering the whole body. Dresses are commonly made of silk or cotton and sandals are made of old tire rubber. People wearing Ao Dai to show their hidden charm or to feel more confident because Vietnamese women are believed to be the most beautiful in this kind of dress.
