The story of C.K. Lal, a survivor of the devastating earthquake on April 25 in Kathmandu, Nepal in the India Times newspaper.
I'm working on the computer in my room. Suddenly the table shook violently at about 11:55 am. I'm not sure about that time, probably before lunch, when I was hungry.
The electricity went out, my wife was screaming outside that there was an earthquake. We huddled together at the dining table. The pots on the stove began to fall down. The microwave fell and broke. The refrigerator shook violently. That one minute lasted like a century.
I ran outside to look. The city crumbled like a layer of dust. All the walls of my neighbor's house cracked, some of the walls broke, concrete blocks fell onto the street. Everyone gathered in an empty spot near a temple. We decided that it was probably safer to stay under the table.
I tried to call my wife's parents. All networks are busy. Meanwhile, a series of aftershocks occurred, the sound of prayers rang out across the street.
Then my phone started ringing. It's a relief. The sounds of everyday life are precious. More aftershocks. The water tank on our roof had broken off the pipe. No tap water. I brought back a bucket of water to use. I'm hungry.
We eat cookies. The TV fell to the ground and broke. I tried turning on the radio. There is some information but the authorities have not yet commented. I checked on the internet and found out it was a very large earthquake: 7.9 on the Richter scale.
I ran outside and tried to calm everyone near our house. But I can't tell them. Some were rummaging through the rubble with their bare hands. My area is fortunately less affected.
Shops reopened at 5 p.m., although there were still aftershocks. Some people counted 15 times in total.
There is no hope that the power will be restored. Water is very precious. The whole neighborhood gathered together. We share fear and loss. Pray together.
