A natural disaster is a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth; examples include floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis and other geologic processes. A natural disaster can cause loss of life or property damage, and typically leaves some economic damage in its wake, the severity of which depends on the affected population's resilience. A natural disaster can kill people directly (through flooding or falling trees) or indirectly (by epidemics resulting from lack of clean water or shelter). It may also cause disruption to food supplies and industries which support life.
It's true that you can't really prepare for a natural disaster. There's no way to predict how severe or damaging it will be, how long it will last, or what the aftermath will look like. You might know it's coming, but you won't know exactly when until those first few drops of rain or rumbles of thunder start to fall from the sky. But if you're prepared, you'll be able to keep your head in the face of danger and get yourself and your family to safety in time.
