- Further Education means any learning after you leave school, but before you go to university. It includes college courses, A levels, apprenticeships and many other qualifications. Further education is a broad term which includes any type of learning after school, college, or university. It can include courses in colleges, universities, or work-based training such as an apprenticeship.
- I am going to attend college, but I am not sure about the major that I will study. My parents want me to take up a business course, but I have been dreaming of becoming a professor all my life. One thing is for sure, I am going to go to a university and take up a major in business, but hopefully my parents will give me the chance to study what I want to study.
- There are several different avenues you can take after secondary school, including college, university and apprenticeships.
College: Colleges offer more vocational training and are often tailored to specific careers. While you can get A levels at some colleges, most courses will be BTECs or other vocational qualifications.
University: Universities offer a broader range of subjects to study, and many courses will last three years (four if you’re doing a Masters). Most degrees will also include elements of work experience, placements and research projects.
Apprenticeships: Apprenticeships combine classroom learning with on-the-job training, allowing you to earn money while you learn. They’re widely available in a range of industries.
- I'm going to a university I haven't decided yet whether to study or start working. I'm waiting for the results of passing my exams. I really want to get into college.
- Should people go straight from school to university, or do something different?
It is a personal choice and there are positives and negatives to either option.
If someone has a clear idea of what they want to do in the future then going straight to university can make sense. In some countries it is the norm, while in others doing something else first is more common.
In many parts of the world, it is possible to start your working life without any qualifications and then study part-time at college or university to gain them later on. This can be beneficial as students gain life experience and may have a clearer idea about their future career path by the time they graduate.
However, if someone does not have a strong interest in the subject they are studying for, or if the course does not offer much practical experience, then it can be a waste of time and money. Spending three years studying art history might not prepare you for working in business or advertising.
