III. GRAMMAR
1. Simple sentences, Compound sentences & Complex sentences
SIMPLE SENTENCE COMPOUND SENTENCE COMPLEX SENTENCE

- Contains a subject and a predicate.
(S + V or S + V1 and V2)
- Expresses a complete thought.
Examples:
- We went to the park yesterday.
- We like pizza.
Tip:
- A simple sentence is also called an independent clause.

- Contains two or more independent clauses.
- Clauses are joined by a coordinating conjunction.
Examples:
- I wanted to go to the party, but I was so tired.
- They got there early, and they got really good seats.
Tip:
- Look for these conjunctions: for, and, nor, but, or, yet (FANBOY)

- Contains an independent clause and a dependent clause.
- Dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction.
Examples:
- Because we went to the park, we did not go to the zoo.
- Although he was wealthy, he was still unhappy.
Tip:
- Look for these subordinating
conjunctions: after, before, because, although, when, since, if, whenever, wherever, unless, why, so that, even though.


2. Past simple - Past continuous (Review)
PAST SIMPLE

 FORM: Regular verbs (-ed): walk – walked
Irregular verbs: no rules: send – sent
• Interrogative/ Negative: Auxiliary verb–did
She came to the party.
Did she come to the party?
She didn’t come to the party.
USE:
1. Action finished in the past
Yesterday, I watched a film on TV. I liked it a lot.
2. Consecutive actions
Yesterday evening, I arrived home, I had a shower and then, I had dinner.
3. A punctual past event that interrupts…
Last night, the lights went off

PAST CONTINUOUS

FORM: was/ were + ing
was sending/ were walking
• Interrogative/ Negative: auxiliary verb
was/were
She was coming to the party.
Was she coming to the party?
She wasn’t coming to the party.
USE:
1. Past action in progress. We consider action
in the middle.
Yesterday evening at 6.00, I was watching a film on TV. It was very interesting.
2. Parallel actions
Yesterday evening, I was having a shower while my wife was having dinner.
