Hi. My name is Maris, and my family is pretty crazy. And not in the unusual, oh they so annoying way. No, my family is weird, because they have been hiding their secret criminal life from me for years. How you may ask? Well, let me tell you about my story.
Growing up, life was pretty normal. I went to school, I hung out with my friends, I played video games. My pretty unnormal parents went to work, had 9 to 5 jobs. And so do my aunties and my uncles.
Little did I know. That was all just an illusion. You see, things are as normal as they seemed. We never lived in the same place for more than six months. We were constantly moving across the country, changing houses. I never got to stay at the same school for long, so at times things could get pretty lonely for me that it was hard for me to make friends.
I never thought it was strange, though, since I had grown up with it my whole life. By the time I was 15 years old, I had lived in over 30 different places. Crazy, right? I told you things weren't that normal in my family. (////^/////)
And that wasn't the only weird thing, now that I look back on my childhood. We would also have some strange "guests" come over to stay at our house. I didn't know them. I'm not even sure if my parents knew them. But they would come over to our house to stay for a week, maybe more, and they would always live in our basement. My parents told me never to tell anyone about our strange "guest". These guests, who were quite weird people, they’d come in wearing rags and looking like they were homeless. Sometimes they'd come in with full-body tattoos. Sometimes they'd come in with bullet wounds, and my parents would have to help treat them and stitch the cuts up. I suppose it was also weird that they never called an ambulance for these wounded "guests", but that was just another part of their secret criminal life.
And when we go on a vacation. My parents, who changed their names, would get a new passport. I thought it was normal to get new passports every time you travel, with a new name. The few times I did ask my parents about it, they'd say they wanted to stay hidden from the "systems", and I didn’t know what that mean. We sometimes stay at a 5-star hotel, but sometimes we rent a motel room - while we are quite rich.
One day, when my dad was at home with me and my mom was going out for some reason. I was in a shower and my dad was on the balcony to call someone. When I came out of the bathroom, he didn’t know that I was out because he was so focused on the call. I was interested in who he was talking to so I stepped closer to listen. When I heard it, it made my jaw drop!
- “Yes yes... This is very risky for my family or harboring a prisoner.” My dad said.
Suddenly, my dad turned around and his eyes turned in shock. He came into the room and told me to forget what I had heard, it was nothing to worry about.
Time passed, when I was going from school to home, a strange woman was in our home. My mom introduced me and told me that I can call her auntie Susan.
It was a bit weird because I was sure that I knew all about my aunties in my relatives. I didn’t care and say hi to her and has never left the house.
Two days later, I was doing English homework and the teacher Iryna told me to write a story about criminals. I searched the Internet and saw... Auntie Susan. It told that Auntie Susan wanted for murder, escape from prison. I quickly ran to my parents and said that Auntie Susan was a MURDER!! But my parents looked sadly at me and told me to keep it a secret. They told me that they help prisoners escape from prison, so the prisoners will give us money and we could go on holiday vacation. And they asked me to join them, but I was too scared that I jumped on a bus and I didn’t know where to go. My parents would find me because I knew their secrets ~
Should I call the police?? I decided to keep it a secret because if I called the police, my parents would be arrested. What should I do now? What would you do in my situation?
