From past to present, every time Tet comes, the cultural customs of the Vietnamese people are used very popularly. The Tet holiday is very ancient, with ancient customs are still widely celebrated. It can be said that the Tet customs are the most complicated rites of Vietnamese culture. Many people do not quite know the origins of the Tet festival. This belief states that in 2579 BC there was a great flood after which king Hung Vuong commanded his people to hold celebrations for three days so as to remind them never to forget their ancestors who had died in this time period. The people then called this day "Tet holiday". The Tet holiday is the largest traditional festival in Vietnam. The meaning of Tet is life, and the ancient Vietnamese celebrated it to celebrate the beginning of Spring and to pray for a better life in the coming year. It starts in early January and lasts for 3 day. Some families enjoy this festival by preparing traditional dishes such as square banh chung, dried fruit, braised meat and eggs, ... and decorating the house with couplets, peach blossom or apricot blossom. Especially, if they are children, I think they are looking forward to Tet because adults give them lucky money as a way to send Tet wishes. Vietnamese people usually return to their families during Tet. They have family gatherings and tighten the bonds with other members. So I guess that’s all I want to talk about Tet in Vietnam.
